George Perry Floyd Jr. (October 14, 1973 – May 25, 2020) was a black American man killed during an arrest in Minneapolis, Minnesota, after allegedly using counterfeit money to buy cigarettes. Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, knelt on his neck for nearly eight minutes as he lay handcuffed on the ground. After his death, protests against police violence toward black people quickly spread across the United States and internationally.

Out in the Bay: A tumultuous year in review

We relaunched Out in the Bay-Queer Radio from San Francisco a year ago this week. Or at least that's when our first episode since 2015 aired on San Francisco Public Press' radio station, KSFP 102.5 FM, and was posted on podcast platforms.

But we — producers Truc Nguyen, Kendra Klang, and I — had started working on the relaunch in early 2020. Before March when COVID-19 changed everything; before May when George Floyd's videotaped killing at the hands of police changed still more things.

We didn't plan to relaunch during a global pandemic or during nationwide demonstrations over our country's history of systemic racism.
