(CNN) – Unions and management reached a tentative deal early Thursday, averting a freight railroad strike that had threatened to cripple US supply chains and push prices higher for many goods.The deal with unions representing more than 50,000 engineers and conductors was announced just after 5 a.m. ET in a statement from the White House, which called it “an important win for our economy and the American people.”A verbal agreement between the two sides was reached at about 2:30 a.m.

(CNN) -- The Senate will punt on a vote over same-sex marriage legislation until after the November midterm elections as negotiators ask for more time to lock down support -- a move that could make it more likely the bill will ultimately pass the chamber.Sen. Tammy Baldwin, a leading Democratic negotiator on the bill that would codify same-sex marriage nationwide, said Thursday that more time is needed to negotiate the issue with Republicans -- and wants to delay any vote in the Senate until after the November midterm elections."We're very confident that the bill will pass, but we will need a little more time," Baldwin told CNN.Democrats had originally been eyeing a Senate vote before this fall's midterms -- potentially even as soon as next week.

With the proposed Respect for Marriage Act awaiting debate in the U.S. Senate, new polling data from the Human Rights Campaign indicates that over two-thirds of registered voters in swing states support marriage equality. The data collected by the HRC, the largest LGBTQ+ civil rights organization in the country, shows that 64 percent of prospective voters in the November midterm election would support a law “protecting the national right to same-sex marriage.” The voters polled all reside in “battleground” states — Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, New Hampshire, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin — defined as states where the Republican and Democratic parties have near-equal levels of support. Thousands or even hundreds of votes could affect the outcome of an election in swing states, yet support for marriage equality surpasses party lines with endorsement from two-thirds of voters.

Uptown Players is getting ready to start a smashing 2022-23 season (read all about it in the Applause section in this issue of Dallas Voice), but first, they have to wind up the 2021-22 season. And they do so in fine form with Douglas Carter Beane’s The Little Dog Laughed, opening Friday, Aug. 19, and running through Aug. 28. The show stars Kevin Moore, Elizabeth Kensek, Carson Shofner and Shyama Nithiananda and tells the story of an up-and-coming actor pretending to be in a relationship with his female agent so no one will know he is gay. Performances are at 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and at 2 p.m. Sundays for the run of the show. Tickets range from $30-$50 and are available online at UptownPlayers.org.
