Soccer Union “Sickened” After Iran Threatens to Execute Star Player

(CNN) – The global soccer players’ union, FIFPRO, said it is “shocked and sickened” by reports that Iranian soccer player Amir Nasr-Azadani faces the possibility of execution “after campaigning for women’s rights and basic freedom in his country.”“We stand in solidarity with Amir and call for the immediate removal of his punishment,” FIFPRO said in a statement posted on Twitter on Monday.Nasr-Azadani has been accused of being a member of an “armed group” that was involved in the death of three security officers during protests in the city of Esfahan in central Iran, said the city’s chief justice Asadullah Jafari, according to state news agency IRNA on Sunday.In the report, Jafari said Nasr-Azadani had been charged with rioting against authorities.

One Killed, 10 Missing After European Island Landslide
(CNN) – One person was killed and 10 more were missing Saturday after heavy rain caused a landslide on the Italian holiday island of Ischia.Search and rescue operations are underway in the small town of Casamicciola Terme and reinforcements are being sent from Naples, said the Italian Fire Brigade, but weather conditions are complicating the search, Italy’s Civil Protection department told CNN on Saturday.Eight people had been rescued as of Saturday evening local time, said the civil protection department.The operations were being coordinated by the Naples prefecture, authorities told CNN, and are expected to continue through the night.  (CNN) -- The Majestic Princess cruise ship was about halfway through a 12-day voyage when an outbreak of cases was noticed, Carnival Australia president Marguerite Fitzgerald told reporters in a media briefing on Saturday.The ship had 4,600 passengers and crew on board at the time, according to CNN affiliate Nine News.After mass testing 3,300 passengers, around 800 tested positive for COVID-19, as did a small number of crew, Fitzgerald said."All positive cases were mildly symptomatic or asymptomatic, and those guests isolated in their staterooms and then separated from non-impacted guests," parent company Princess Cruises representative Briana Latter told CNN.Cruise operators separately escorted those infected off the ship and advised them to complete a five-day isolation period, CNN affiliate Nine News reported.Those who tested negative were permitted to leave the ship, a New South Wales Health statement read."Carnival has advised NSW Health that they are assisting passengers with COVID-19 to make safe onward travel arrangements," the statement added.Latter said the outbreak aboard the Majestic Princess was "reflective of an increase in community transmission in Australia."Australia has seen an uptick in COVID cases recently, leading to more caution from within the government.The New South Wales Ministry of Health has recorded 19,800 new cases of COVID-19 and 22 deaths in the past week.The Majestic Princess cruise ship has since departed Sydney on her next voyage to Melbourne and Tasmania.In a later statement, Fitzgerald said Carnival Australia have made over 50 international and domestic voyages "with a vast majority of more than 100,000 guests unimpacted by COVID.""However, the emergence of COVID in the community has

Severely Damaged Plane Makes Emergency Landing

REPORT: Pilots Miss Airport After Falling Asleep Mid-Flight
(CNN) -- Two pilots are believed to have fallen asleep and missed their landing during a flight from Sudan to Ethiopia on Monday, according to a report by commercial aviation news site Aviation Herald.The incident took place on board an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737-800 en route from Khartoum to Addis Ababa, the report said, “when the pilots fell asleep” and “the aircraft continued past the top of descent.”Data obtained by the website indicates that the aircraft was cruising at 37,000 feet on autopilot when it failed to descend at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, its scheduled destination, on August 15.Air traffic control were apparently unable to reach the crew despite making several attempts at contact. However, an alarm was triggered when the plane overshot the runway and continued along the route.The aircraft subsequently began to descend, landing safely around 25 minutes later.Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) data shows the aircraft overflying the runway, before beginning its descent and maneuvering for another approach.“We have received a report which indicates Ethiopian flight number ET343 en route from Khartoum to Addis Ababa temporarily lost communication with Addis Ababa Air Traffic Control on 15 August 2022,” reads a statement issued by Ethiopian Airlines on Friday.“The flight later landed safely after communication was restored.
