Star Trek’s George Takei recalls hiding his sexuality due to fears he’d lose his career: ‘I lived a double life’

who is best known for playing Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek, had been among those lobbying for signatures and spoke openly to the press as a gay man, after deciding to finally come out in the public eye.

Speaking on David Tennant Does A Podcast With, Takei recalled being too afraid to reveal his sexuality, as he had been ‘clinging onto his career’, but found that coming out had actually been ‘liberating’ for him.

He said: ‘What I feared most, that I would lose my career, didn’t happen. In fact, the very opposite happened. I got cast in more guest shots on television… the character was a gay George Takei character, on Third Rock, Will and Grace, the Big Bang Theory. ‘It was liberating.
