LGBTQ+ politicians, civil rights activists, and allies are thrilled with the U.S. Senate’s passage Tuesday of the Respect for Marriage Act, which will write marriage equality into federal law and protect it from being rescinded by the Supreme Court.The House of Representatives has already approved the bill, but since the Senate amended it with a religious freedom provision, it has to go back to the House for another vote.

Far right activists and organizations for months have been falsely claiming legislation to protect same-sex marriages would destroy different-sex marriages and take away religious rights from ordinary Americans, but early Tuesday evening on a bipartisan basis the Senate passed the Respect for Marriage Act, 61-36.

The U.S. Senate voted 61-36 Tuesday to pass the Respect for Marriage Act, which will write marriage equality into federal law, maintaining it even if the Supreme Court overturns its 2015 ruling that established equal marriage rights nationwide.The bill has already been passed by the House of Representatives, but the Senate added an amendment to it aimed at protecting religious freedom, so the new version needs to be voted on by the House before it can go to President Joe Biden for his expected signature.“Today, after many rounds of bipartisan talks and after many doubts that we could even reach this point, we are taking the momentous step forward for greater justice for LGBTQ Americans,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said before the vote.He said the first person he would call after the vote would be his daughter Alison, who is in a same-sex marriage."What a great day," he added after the vote finished.The push for the Respect for Marriage Act came after Justice Clarence Thomas wrote that the Obergefell v.

The mother of the accused Club Q shooter was detained by police the day after the attack, according to court records released Monday.Laura Voepel, 45, was detained about 3:30 a.m. November 20 at a Colorado Springs apartment complex, The Denver Post reports. (CNN) – A ‘Tornado Tuesday’ of severe storms is expected to deliver the potential for a monstrous trio of tornadoes, damaging winds, and hail to millions of people across parts of the Southeast and Mississippi Valley beginning Tuesday afternoon, forecasters are warning.More than 40 million people from southeastern Texas eastward to Georgia, and northward to central Indiana and Illinois are under a threat of severe weather Tuesday, according to the Storm Prediction Center.The largest potential for the most severe weather is for about 1 million people in parts of central Mississippi, including Jackson, as well as parts of east-central Louisiana. In those areas, the threat for severe weather, including large hail and possible tornadoes, is a Level 4 of 5, with 5 being the highest, according to prediction the center.The Level 4, or moderate threat, is rare for this time of year for that region, which usually sees tornadoes during the spring and summer months.“Severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes, very large hail, and a few severe wind gusts are expected this afternoon into the overnight period across parts of the lower to mid-Mississippi Valley and parts of the Southeast,” the prediction center said.

(CNN) -- The World Health Organization announced Monday that "mpox" is now the preferred name for monkeypox."Both names will be used simultaneously for one year while 'monkeypox' is phased out," the organization said.The Biden administration said they "welcome the change" and the US will use the mpox name "from this point forward."Monkeypox was named in 1970, more than a decade after the virus that causes the disease was discovered in captive monkeys, the organization said. But monkeypox probably didn't start in monkeys -- its origin is still unknown -- and the virus can be found in several other kinds of animals.The name was created before WHO published best practices for naming diseases in 2015.Scientists and experts have pushed since the start of the recent outbreak to change the name to avoid discrimination and stigma that could steer people away from testing and vaccination.

In an inquiry into the numerous hate crimes against LGBTQ+ people in Australia between the 1970s and 2000s, a spotlight has brought attention to lesbian targets of the violence. While most of the evidence and cases involve queer men, Carole Ruthchild gave evidence as the first witness from the lesbian community at New South Wales Special Commission Inquiry — the commission investigating the hate crimes, according to the Australian Associated Press.Ruthchild is the former advisor to the attorney general on LGBTQ+ subjects. In 2008, her activism on LGBTQ+ rights led to her being inducted into the NSW Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby Hall of Fame.Although homosexuality in New South Wales had been decriminalized in 1984, it didn’t change how queer people were targeted.
