Meet Rose, the most senior of all this week’s adoptable pets at 12 years old. She is a good-sized cat at 11 pounds, and she is covered in orange and white fur with big eyes and a chill disposition. Like many cats, it may take Rose a minute or two to warm up to a new person, but then she shows her true colors as a very sweet cat. Her “dream home” isn’t too demanding of an ask: She just wants to live out her days in a place with a comfy bed and a caring family. She is located at the Jan Rees-Jones Animal Care Center, so no appointment is necessary to meet her in person.

Meet Elsa, an adorable and loving retriever mix who is 4 years old and weighs 61 pounds. She has jet-black fur with some white sneaking in here and there. Elsa has a good bit of energy and likes to get out and play. She would love to go to a home with a securely fenced backyard, but any owner who makes sure she gets her exercise will too. Elsa gets along with other dogs and seems to do well with human kiddos to. She is waiting at the Jan Rees-Jones Animal Care Center, so no prior appointment is necessary to meet Elsa in person.

Meet Nessie, a female domestic shorthair mix who is almost 3 years old and weighs in at a light 6 pounds. She has a coat of gray, tan and white fur and big eyes. Nessie is a bit on the shy side, so she will be looking for a family who can provide her with a calm and serene home as she acclimates to a new environment. It would be ideal for Nessie to go to a home where there is already a friendly cat ready to show her the ropes. Nessie loves treats and likes to play with toys. She gets a bit nervous around small humans, so she would prefer a home where all the people were at least 15 years old.

Meet Joyce, a domestic shorthair mix weighing 7 pounds and covered in black and grey fur. At 6-and-a-half years old Joyce is far too refined for silly kitten antics. She can be quite friendly and affectionate, but that only comes after she gets to know someone well. Joyce is really hoping to go to a home where there is already a friendly cat ready to show her the ropes. She prefers adult company as children tend to frighten her a bit. She would prefer a calm and serene environment, especially during her transition period. Joyce is currently waiting at the Jan Rees-Jones Animal Care Center, so no appointment is necessary to meet her.

Meet Lt. Dan, a very happy and energetic little pup who is just over a year old. He is a Labrador retriever mix and has been with the SPCA of Texas since he was a puppy. He weighs 43 pounds and is covered in black fur with a little white underneath. Lt. Dan is celebrating this week because he was just outfitted with his brand new wheelchair! He had the misfortune of being born with deformed front legs. For his first year he managed without them completely and was even adept at rising up on his back legs. Now with his wheelchair exploring will become even easier for him. Lt. Dan is at the Jan Rees-Jones Animal Care Center, so no appointment is necessary to meet him.

Meet June, a terrier/pit bull mix who is 1 year old and weighs in at 33 pounds with a light brown coat. She can be a shy girl when you first meet her, but that playful puppy is just waiting to come out and shine. June came to the SPCA of Texas as a stray from the unincorporated areas of Dallas County. She is quite done with the homeless life and very much looks forward to being part of a loving family. She is housed at the Russell E. Dealey Animal Rescue Center, so an appointment is necessary to meet her.

Meet Pearl, an adorable little kitty waiting at the Jan Rees-Jones Animal Care Center in Dallas for her forever home. She is a tiny grey cat at only 6 pounds with adorable little “vampire teeth” — but don’t worry! She is quite satisfied with cat food. Pearl is an older cat at 13-and-a-half who came to the SPCA as a stray. She does have some health situations due to her age, so she is available as a foster whereby all her medical care will be taken care of by the SPCA of Texas. Anyone looking for a lovable cat who is well past her kitten craziness would do well to pay Pearl a visit.

Meet Khana, a retriever/Labrador/terrier/pit bull mix who weighs 60 pounds and is covered with short black fur (and a few white patches here and there). Khana is a shy doggie, and it takes a moment or two for her to get comfortable with new people, which is part of the reason she has been at the shelter for a bit more than two years now. Once comfy, she is a very good girl and appreciative of love and attention. Khana seems to do very well with other dogs, and she’s willing to meet kids too. Khana is available on a foster-to-adopt program to make sure it’s a great fit all around.

Meet Cleopatra, the queen of cat condo! Actually, she is a somewhat timid little kitty who is hoping for the perfect home while she waits at the SPCA of Texas. Cleopatra is almost 4 years old and weighs a mere 7 pounds. She is covered in a regal black coat with big yellow eyes. She was seized from an animal cruelty case back in May, so her starting out point in life was a little shaky. Her ideal home will be calm and serene while she adjusts to the new environment. Rambunctious kiddos can be very frightening for her, so a home with children over 12 who can be respectful of a cat’s needs is best.

Meet Mad Eye Moody, a German shepherd mix named after a wizard in the Harry Potter series, he can cast a spell on any shepherd lover. Unfortunately, Mad Eye had to have one of his eyes removed in emergency surgery after being taken in by the SPCA of Texas. But he has since gotten past that setback and is ready to live a happy, healthy life. He is just over 3 years old and weighs in at 67 pounds. He’s got that classic black-over-tan shepherd coat, and while he is super energetic, he is a well-behaved boy. He knows some basic commands and is eager and able to learn a lot more. Mad Eye Moody is housed at the Russell E. Dealey Animal Rescue Center, so a prior appointment is necessary to meet him.

Meet Miuna, pretty little black domestic shorthair mix who is just over a year old and weighs just over 7 pounds. This dainty little lady with her big yellow eyes is a sweet little girl, but she is also very timid, so it may take a short time for her to warm up to new people. She would be happiest if she went to a home with another confident and friendly cat already on the grounds. Even then, she’ll need a small period of alone time to acclimate to the new environment. Playful small children would be very frightening for Miuna, so she would prefer to go to a home with teens and adults only. She is at the Jan Rees-Jones Animal Care Center, so no appointment is necessary to meet her.

Meet Sheba, a gorgeous Dutch Shepherd mix waiting for her forever home. Sheba is 2-and-a-half years old and weighs 60 pounds with brindle coat. Unfortunately, Sheba was not treated very well in the first round of life, so it takes a few minutes for her to warm up to strangers. When she has become comfortable however, she is an affectionate little pooch who loves to be scratched and doted on. She would love to go to a calm home where she can acclimate to a new and wonderful life. She’d prefer a home where all the kids are over 12 years old. She is at the Russell E. Dealey Animal Rescue Center, so a prior appointment is necessary to meet her.

Meet Minerva, a 4-year-old shepherd mix who weighs 55 pounds and has a regal, light brown coat of fur. She loves treats, toys and snuggling up with a trusted friend. She was found as a stray wandering the streets of Ennis alone, so not too much is known about her earliest days. Minerva needed a little bit of medical TLC upon arrival and is still being treated for heartworms so she is on exercise restrictions but is otherwise a healthy gal. She is currently in foster care, so making an appointment in advance is necessary to meet with her in person.

Richard Eyre’s writing debut has been a long time coming. The veteran director, recognised numerous times at the Olivier Awards (including with a lifetime achievement award), finally turned his hand to writing during the pandemic. The result is The Snail House, a two-hour political play which premiered earlier this week at the Hampstead Theatre. Eyre – the former artistic director of the National Theatre – also directs the show, which features Vincent Franklin in the lead role.

Years and Years front man Olly Alexander has sprung to even more queer fame with his starring role in Russell T Davies’ searing AIDS-era drama  It’s A Sin, currently on Channel 4,  but also worth a watch is Growing Up Gay – a documentary released in 2017 about his journey from school bullying victim to diversity role model.Olly constantly has his heart not on his sleeve but on full display and there are times in this hour that he simply breaks down in front of the camera being reminded of his past  traumas or seeing them replicated in other youngsters he meets.The film pulls no punches dealing with depresssion, anxiety, lack of self-worth, bulimia, self-harm and thoughts of suicide.

Heterosexual actors portraying queer characters has become a controversial topic in Hollywood, with many in the LGBTQ+ community arguing that they should be telling their own stories. However, Neil Patrick Harris revealed Thursday that he thinks directors should hire the “best actor” regardless of orientation — even claiming that it’s “sexy” when straight actors play gay.“I think there’s something sexy about casting a straight actor to play a gay role — if they’re willing to invest a lot into it,” Harris, 47, told The Times.

Meet Persephone, a 7-year-old female Rottweiler mix weighing 86 pounds. She’s a big, beautiful gal, mostly black with tan markings on her face, floppy ears and big, brown eyes. She may be a senior girl, but she still has a whole lotta love to give. She will do just about anything for treats and attention from people. She loves belly rubs, curling up for naps in a soft bed and playing with soft toys. Persephone would prefer to be the only queen in your home without other pets. She would do well with older children and will make a loving companion to anyone looking for a giant teddy bear. Persephone is waiting to meet you at the SPCA of Texas’ Russell H. Meet Morris, a male, 2-year-old Siberian husky mix weighing 55 pounds. He’s a sweet, fun-loving pup looking for a forever family. He came to the SPCA of Texas when he was transferred in from another shelter, so not much is known about his past, but he has captured the hearts of several staff members here at the SPCA of Texas with his outgoing, goofy personality. He loves to play with toys, play outside and go for walks. He’s smart, too, and knows how to “sit,” “shake” and “lie down” on command. Morris is looking for a home with older teens and adults only and would love to meet any other dogs in the home to see if they get along.
