He bought the Miss Universe brand of beauty pageants in 1996, and sold it in 2015. He produced and hosted The Apprentice, a reality television series, from 2003 to 2015. Netflix special The Closer is proof that "cancel culture doesn't exist."His 2021 stand-up show caused an outcry amongst the LGBTQ+ community as it was labeled "transphobic" by many.

He recently stood by his comments during another Netflix special, calling students who criticized him "instruments of oppression."When the 2022 Emmy nominations were announced on Tuesday, Chappelle's The Closer was nominated for "Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) and Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special.'Chappelle's nominations were met with fury from some online who believed it was proof that cancel culture isn't as big a threat as it's made out to be."Dave Chappelle's transphobic stand up special was nominated for an Emmy," wrote @pierogiwitch on Twitter, "I'm sorry I don't ever want to hear any cishet man complain about cancel culture again.
