George Perry Floyd Jr. (October 14, 1973 – May 25, 2020) was a black American man killed during an arrest in Minneapolis, Minnesota, after allegedly using counterfeit money to buy cigarettes. Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, knelt on his neck for nearly eight minutes as he lay handcuffed on the ground. After his death, protests against police violence toward black people quickly spread across the United States and internationally.

Activists around the country back protests against police brutality

Activists around the country continue to stand in solidarity with those who are protesting against police brutality in the wake of George Floyd’s death.

Tremaine Jones is the project director of the Freedom Fund, an organization based in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., that helps LGBTQ inmates and detained immigrants post bail.

Jones also identifies as a Black queer man. Jones on June 1 told the Washington Blade during a telephone interview he supports those who have taken to the streets to protest
